‘Sesame Street’ is ready for military families to ‘Move with Elmo’

For almost 60 years, there’s been at least one trusted name in children’s educational entertainment. “Sesame Street” has pioneered using puppetry to explain the heaviest, most complex realities of the human experience to children. From the passing of the beloved Mr. Hooper to the 9/11 Attacks, there seems to be nothing Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and their pals can’t help children make sense of.

The same is true of military life. Beginning in 2006, “Sesame Street” created a special series of videos, activities, and printouts (and more) to help military families and our beloved military brats understand the unique demands, trials, and rewards of living a military life. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sesame Street for Military Families, Sesame Workshop launched a new digital game, family resources, and social content get military-connected children and caregivers up, active, and building healthy routines together.

Sesame Street for Military Families is part of a partnership between the nonprofit Sesame Workshop and the Department of Defense’s Office of Military Community and Family Policy. The initiative has covered TDYs, deployments, PCSs, and homecomings in the past, but the latest offering is something for everyday life—and it’s not just for the children.

In September 2026, Sesame Street launched a new collection of free digital resources focused on turning movement, play, and everyday physical wellness into something families can build together, anywhere they might be.

These include a facilitator guide with printable activities that offer family support professionals tools to help families build resilience, strengthen relationships, and navigate transitions together; updated website tools informed by military family advisors to tackle what families need for everyday life, family activities, and simple, practical tips for healthy eating, movement, and wellness.

There’s also a new interactive game, Move With Elmo, that gets children and caregivers up and moving together through playful, active exercises designed to fit into everyday routines.

Best of all, everything created by Sesame Street for Military Families is free. Check out the new offerings on its website.
