MyCAA — up to $4,000 for licensure
The Military Spouse Career Advancement Account covers up to $4,000 (over 3 years) toward licenses, certifications, or associate degrees in a portable career field. Eligible: spouses of active duty E-1 to E-6, W-1 to W-2, and O-1 to O-3.
Apply at mycaa.militaryonesource.mil. Process takes about a week.
GI Bill transfer
If your service member has 6+ years and commits to 4 more, they can transfer Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to you. This must happen while they're still on active duty. Once they separate, transfer is impossible. See full GI Bill guide.

Survivor and dependent education benefits
If your service member dies in line of duty or from service-connected causes, the Fry Scholarship (post-9/11 deaths) or Chapter 35 DEA covers up to 36 months of education. See survivor benefits.

- Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) — 600+ partner employers committed to recruiting, hiring, and retaining military spouses
- Hiring Our Heroes — Chamber of Commerce program with a dedicated military spouse track
- USAJOBS spouse preference — non-competitive federal hiring authority for spouses of active duty (Executive Order 13473)
- State licensure portability — 2024 federal law (Servicemembers Civil Relief Act expansion) requires states to recognize out-of-state professional licenses for military spouses during PCS
Healthcare
TRICARE — you're covered as a dependent while your service member is on active duty, plus 30 days after separation under TRICARE. Retirees can keep TRICARE for life with the Survivor Benefit Plan election.
CHCBP — Continued Healthcare Benefit Program. 18-36 months of TRICARE-like coverage post-separation. Buy within 60 days.
CHAMPVA — for spouses of veterans rated 100% P&T disabled or who died from service-connected causes. Free comprehensive healthcare. More on CHAMPVA.
Mental health
Military spouses are at elevated risk for depression, anxiety, and isolation — especially during deployments. Available support:
- Vet Centers — yes, military spouses qualify for free Vet Center counseling. No appointment, no paperwork.
- Military OneSource — up to 12 free counseling sessions per issue, no diagnosis required. 1-800-342-9647.
- Give an Hour — free counseling for military families.
- Cohen Veterans Network — free or low-cost, family-inclusive.
- Wounded Warrior Project — Family Programs and peer support.
Caregiving
If your service member has a serious service-connected injury, you may qualify for the PCAFC stipend — monthly pay, mental-health support, training, respite care, and CHAMPVA-style health coverage. See caregiver guide.
Emergency assistance
- Branch Aid Societies — Army Emergency Relief, Navy-Marine Corps Relief, Air Force Aid Society, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance. Interest-free loans, grants, and budget counseling.
- Operation Homefront — emergency financial assistance for active-duty and veteran families
- Warriors Fund — direct financial assistance during transition or hardship
- Modest Needs — short-term emergency grants for working military families
