A significant WWII battle took place in the Atlantic Ocean. German U-boat "Wolf Packs" had been targeting ships since 1939, but the US Navy improved its tactics by May 1943. The US Navy employed new technologies and strategies, including submarine hunter-killer groups.

One such group, Task Force 21. 11, was formed around the USS Block Island. The destroyer escort USS Buckley was part of this task force and engaged a German sub on May 5, 1944, after receiving a radar contact from a TBM Avenger.

Further details of this battle are available from the source.
