DAV applauds the Department of Veterans Affairs for launching a new trial evaluating MDMA-assisted therapy for veterans living with PTSD and alcohol use disorder. Far too many veterans continue to struggle with the invisible wounds of war, often after exhausting traditional treatment options. Veterans deserve access to every safe, evidence-based tool that may help them heal, and this study represents an important step forward in better understanding the role psychedelics could play in veteran mental health care.

DAV statement on Major Richard Star Act
The vote to turn the Major Richard Star Act into law is long overdue. Fortunately, a “ discharge petition ” can finally get this done.

Our analysis The Department of Veterans Affairs' study on MDMA-assisted therapy for veterans with PTSD and alcohol use disorder marks a significant development in the pursuit of innovative treatments for veteran mental health care. As the VA explores alternative approaches, this trial may pave the way for increased access to psychedelic therapies for veterans who have not responded to traditional treatments. The fact that the DAV is applauding this effort highlights the growing recognition of the need for diverse treatment options to address the complex mental health needs of veterans. This study also underscores the VA's commitment to providing evidence-based care, which may have implications for the broader healthcare system and the national conversation around mental health treatment. The outcomes of this trial will be closely watched, particularly in states with high veteran populations, where access to effective treatments for PTSD and substance use disorders is a pressing concern.
