Army downs Tulsa while Air Force and Navy fall in conference play

Army secured a last-second victory against Tulsa, while Air Force and Navy sustained conference losses during Week 8 of the 2026 college football season.

Army Nips Tulsa as Time Expires

For the second time this season, the Army Black Knights (5-2, 4-1 American) defeated a conference opponent when Dawson Jones made a last-second field goal. The game-winner Friday night against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (4-4, 1-3 American) was a 50-yard kick that split the uprights and gave Army a 38-35 victory.

On October 10, Jones converted a 25-yard field goal on the final play to beat Tulane 20-17.

Jones’ field goals accounted for nine of Army’s points against Tulsa and included a 51-yarder in the first quarter and a 34-yard kick with two seconds left in the first half. The latter gave the Black Knights a 20-14 lead going into halftime. Jones became the first Army kicker to make two field goals of 50 yards or longer in the same game.

Sophomore cornerback Julian Porter intercepted a pass with just more than 30 seconds remaining in the first half, setting up Jones’ second field goal. Porter also recorded five tackles against Tulsa.

Clad in black helmets, white jerseys, and white pants, the Black Knights scored all four of their touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback Cale Hellums ran for scores in the first, second, and fourth quarters. His fourth-quarter touchdown with 1 minute, 50 seconds remaining tied the score at 35.

Hellums completed seven of 12 passes for 64 yards and rushed for 121 yards. He surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards.

Army’s other rushing touchdown came at 12:10 in the third quarter when running back Godspower Nwawuihe burst through the hole and raced 66 yards for a score. A successful two-point conversion by Zach Mundell extended Army’s lead to 28-14. Nwawuihe finished with a team-high 135 rushing yards.

In honor of Military Appreciation Night, the host Golden Hurricane wore white helmets featuring the Tulsa insignia in the colors of the American flag. The 1st Infantry Division, known as the “Big Red One,” was recognized as the game’s Honored Division.

Tulsa quarterback Baylor Hayes completed 23 of 34 passes for 262 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Wide receivers Javon Ross and Jimmy Calloway caught the touchdown passes in the second and fourth quarters, respectively. Ross also scored the Golden Hurricane’s first touchdown on an 8-yard run at 5:56 in the first quarter, tying the score at 7.

Army is scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff on Halloween night against Memphis (6-2, 3-1 American) at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. ESPNU will broadcast the game. The Tigers are coming off a 41-34 overtime victory against East Carolina on October 22.

Memphis QB Marcus Stokes has thrown for 2,161 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. He is among the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) leaders in both categories. Stokes has thrown six interceptions.

Running back Jaylin Carter leads the Tigers in rushing with 833 yards and eight touchdowns. Tight end Hunter Tipton leads the team in receiving yards with 409 and five touchdowns.

Medders Injured in Air Force’s Loss to Wyoming

Despite outgaining the Wyoming Cowboys (5-3, 4-1 Mountain West) in total offense and controlling the clock for much of Friday night’s contest in Laramie, the Air Force Falcons fell 28-14. Three lost fumbles proved costly for the Falcons (5-2, 3-2).

Wearing white jerseys and pants with blue helmets emblazoned with gray lightning bolts, the Falcons relied heavily on quarterback Evan Medders, who completed three of four passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. He also led the team in rushing with 115 yards. The Falcons’ only touchdown came on a 5-yard pass to Grant Wayne with 6:53 to go in the third quarter. The 15-play, 75-yard drive narrowed the Cowboys’ lead to 21-14 following Medders’ successful two-point conversion.

Medders exited at the end of the third quarter with an undisclosed injury. Coach Troy Calhoun said afterward that the injury was not a fracture but provided no additional details.

Backup quarterback Josh Johnson lost two fumbles in the fourth quarter as Air Force attempted to overcome the seven-point deficit. The first occurred on a play from Wyoming’s 10-yard line with 12:09 remaining, ending a potential tying drive. Johnson fumbled again near midfield on fourth down with 8:20 left.

Carter Cremascoli connected on field goals of 37 and 46 yards in the second quarter.

Wyoming’s Tyler Hughes completed 10 of 17 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. The dual-threat quarterback also rushed for 146 yards and a first-quarter touchdown. He connected with tight end Jake Wilson for a 4-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Later in the quarter, Hughes completed a pass to wide receiver Eric Richardson, who lateraled to running back Samuel “Tote” Harris for an 11-yard touchdown, increasing the Cowboys’ lead to 21-6 going into halftime.

Running back Markell Holman’s fourth-quarter touchdown with just over three minutes left made the score 28-14.

On Saturday, October 31, Air Force will host the UConn Huskies (4-3) at Falcon Stadium for a 3 p.m. ET kickoff on Mountain West Plus. Last year, the Falcons fell to UConn in East Hartford 26-16.

Dual-threat quarterback Kalieb Osborne has thrown for 1,594 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 336 yards and seven touchdowns. Running back Cyncir Bowers leads the Huskies in rushing with 564 yards and seven touchdowns.

Navy Stumbles at North Texas

In a high-scoring affair at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium during Navy’s 2026 homecoming, the North Texas Mean Green (5-2, 3-0 American) defeated the Navy Midshipmen (2-5, 1-4) 49-39.

Navy quarterback Jackson Gutierrez rushed for 228 yards and three touchdowns while throwing for another score. He completed seven of 10 passes for 133 yards. His 43-yard touchdown run and a successful two-point conversion brought the Mids within 35-25 with just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

North Texas capitalized on special teams and defensive opportunities. Dalton Carnes returned a Navy punt 76 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Linebacker Zakye Barker returned a Midshipmen fumble 63 yards for a score in the third quarter.

Navy slotback Michael Barrow recorded two second-half touchdowns: a 15-yard touchdown reception with 15 seconds left in the third quarter and a 4-yard rushing touchdown at the 10:49 mark of the fourth quarter. His fourth-quarter touchdown brought the Mids within three points, 42-39.

Despite an interception by senior cornerback Irabonoise Oniha late in the third quarter that set up a scoring drive, the Midshipmen’s defense struggled to contain North Texas quarterback Tayven Jackson. Jackson threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns.

Wide receiver Justin Stevenson was Jackson’s primary target, amassing 209 yards on eight receptions and two touchdowns. His scores came on a 45-yard reception during North Texas’ first possession and a 53-yarder with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter, the latter extending the Mean Green’s lead to 42-25.

Running back Jahiem White rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns, scoring in the second and fourth quarters. His 59-yard touchdown run with 9:38 remaining restored North Texas’ 10-point lead, 49-39, and capped the game’s scoring.

Outside of the traditional service academy rivalries, few matchups on Navy’s annual football schedule generate as much anticipation as the Midshipmen’s longstanding series with Notre Dame. This season marks their 99th meeting. The fifth-ranked Fighting Irish (6-1) will face the Midshipmen at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, at noon ET Saturday on ABC.

The Fighting Irish had a bye after losing 28-24 to nationally ranked BYU on October 17.

Quarterback CJ Carr leads Notre Dame’s offense with 1,639 passing yards and 16 touchdowns. Running backs Jonaz Walton and Nolan James Jr. lead the Fighting Irish in rushing with 426 and 412 yards, respectively. James has scored a team-high six rushing touchdowns.

Wide receiver Jordan Faison leads Notre Dame with 451 receiving yards and four touchdowns, while Micah Gilbert has added 409 yards and two touchdowns.
