What New Hampshire offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.
New Hampshire offers a property tax credit for service-connected total disability: a standard $700 credit for resident veterans with a 100% permanent service-connected disability (including double amputees, paraplegics, and those rated individually unemployable), and cities and towns may vote to adopt a larger credit. A home acquired or modified with VA assistance is fully exempt from property tax. Applications are due to the municipality by April 15.
New Hampshire does not tax military retirement pay — the state has no broad income tax on wages or retirement income, and its interest and dividends tax was repealed for taxable periods beginning after December 31, 2024.
Children of New Hampshire veterans who died in wartime service or from a service-connected disability qualify for free tuition at University System of New Hampshire and Community College System of New Hampshire schools, plus a scholarship of up to $2,500 per year (up to 4 years) for room, board, and books. USNH also offers a tuition waiver for children of 100% permanently disabled New Hampshire veterans.
Many New Hampshire municipalities also offer an optional veterans' tax credit for other qualifying veterans, with amounts varying by town.
