New Mexico Veteran Benefits (2026)

What New Mexico offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Under a constitutional amendment approved by voters in November 2024 and effective for the 2026 tax year, New Mexico veterans with a VA service-connected disability rating receive a property tax exemption proportional to their rating — a 60% rating exempts 60% of the tax, and a 100% rating exempts the full amount. The exemption also extends to unremarried surviving spouses of eligible veterans.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

New Mexico exempts up to $30,000 per year of military retirement pay from state income tax (phased in at $10,000 in 2022 and $20,000 in 2023, reaching $30,000 for 2024 and currently authorized through tax year 2026).

Education benefits

The Wartime Veterans Scholarship covers tuition and required books at New Mexico public and Tribal colleges for veterans who served in combat since 1990 and have exhausted federal GI Bill benefits; the companion Vietnam Veterans Scholarship covers tuition, fees, and books for eligible Vietnam-era veterans. Both are certified through the Department of Veterans Services and administered with the NM Higher Education Department.

Also worth knowing

The state also offers veterans free and reduced-fee hunting and fishing licenses and veteran specialty license plates through the Department of Veterans Services.
