Montana Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Montana offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

The Montana Disabled Veteran Assistance Program (MDV) reduces the property-tax rate on the primary residence of a veteran rated 100% disabled from a service-connected injury, or their unmarried surviving spouse. Depending on income and marital status, the tax rate is reduced by 50%, 70%, 80%, or 100%. Income limits apply and applications are filed with the Montana Department of Revenue by April 15.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Montana generally taxes military retirement pay as ordinary income, but qualifying resident retirees may exempt up to 50% of their military retirement income (limited to the amount of their Montana-source earned income) under the state's military retirement exemption, claimed on Form WMRE.

Education benefits

The Montana University System's Honorably Discharged Veteran Tuition Waiver covers remaining in-state tuition as a last-dollar award at MUS campuses for Montana-resident veterans with a full honorable discharge who have exhausted or lost eligibility for their federal VA education benefits.

Also worth knowing

The Montana Veterans Affairs Division operates nine veteran service offices across the state and three Montana State Veterans Cemeteries.
