Property tax exemption
West Virginia's Disabled Veteran Real Property Tax Credit gives honorably discharged veterans rated 90-100% permanently and totally disabled (and eligible surviving spouses) a refundable state income tax credit equal to the property taxes timely paid on their homestead. First claimable on 2024 West Virginia income tax returns; veterans who owe little or no state income tax can claim the amount as a refund.
Military retirement pay & state income tax
West Virginia fully exempts military retirement income from state income tax with no dollar cap, covering retirement pay from the regular Armed Forces, Reserves, and National Guard, including survivorship annuities.
Education benefits
West Virginia public colleges and universities waive tuition and mandatory fees, for up to eight semesters, for resident veterans awarded the Medal of Honor or Purple Heart (Purple Heart recipients must have lost a limb or have a permanent disability from their wounds). The state's Veterans Re-Education Assistance program separately offers up to $500 per semester for veterans who have exhausted federal GI Bill benefits.
