What Vermont offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.
Vermont law mandates a minimum $10,000 property tax exemption on the appraised value of the home for veterans rated 50% or higher for VA disability compensation, veterans receiving VA non-service-connected pension, and veterans on medical military retirement; surviving spouses of veterans who received the exemption also qualify. Towns may vote to increase the exemption up to $40,000. Proof of eligibility must be filed with the Vermont Office of Veterans Affairs each year by May 1.
Under Act 71, signed in 2025, Vermont exempts military retirement pay and survivor benefits from state income tax for retirees with federal AGI of $125,000 or less, with the exemption phasing out between $125,000 and $175,000.
Vermont grants in-state tuition rates to veterans, active-duty personnel, and their dependents at Vermont public colleges, and the Vermont National Guard Tuition Benefit Program can cover up to full tuition at Vermont institutions for Guard members in good standing.
The Vermont Armed Services Scholarship provides tuition help at Vermont institutions for families of service members who died while serving on active or inactive duty.
