South Dakota Veteran Benefits (2026)

What South Dakota offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

South Dakota exempts up to $150,000 of the assessed value of an owner-occupied home for veterans rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected disability, and for unremarried surviving spouses. Paraplegic veterans (loss or loss of use of both lower extremities) can qualify for a full property tax exemption on a home designed for wheelchair use. Applications go to the county Director of Equalization by November 1 each year.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

South Dakota has no state income tax, so military retirement pay is not taxed at the state level.

Education benefits

South Dakota offers free tuition at state-supported universities and technical colleges for veterans with qualifying wartime service — one month of free undergraduate tuition per month served during a wartime period, from a minimum of one academic year up to four. Federal VA education benefits must be used up first.

Also worth knowing

Children under 25 of resident veterans who died in action or on active duty, or who were POW/MIA, may attend state institutions tuition-free if not eligible for equal or greater federal benefits.
