Rhode Island Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Rhode Island offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Rhode Island veteran property-tax exemptions are granted at the city and town level under R.I. Gen. Laws 44-3-4, so the dollar amount of assessed value exempted varies by municipality. State law provides larger exemptions for totally disabled veterans and an additional exemption for veterans who received a VA specially adapted housing grant. Apply through the local tax assessor with a DD-214 and VA disability documentation.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Beginning with the 2023 tax year, military service pensions are fully exempt from Rhode Island state income tax.

Education benefits

Rhode Island's Disabled Veterans Tuition Waiver lets resident veterans with a VA service-connected disability rating of 10% or higher have tuition waived at the state's public institutions (URI, Rhode Island College, and CCRI); the waiver covers tuition only, not fees or books.

Also worth knowing

The state also operates the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol and the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, both run through the Office of Veterans Services.
