What Pennsylvania offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.
Pennsylvania's Disabled Veterans' Real Estate Tax Exemption fully exempts the primary residence from real-estate taxes for honorably discharged wartime veterans who are Pennsylvania residents, are rated 100% permanently disabled from service (or are blind, paralyzed, or lost two or more limbs due to service), and demonstrate financial need. Gross annual income of $114,637 or less is currently presumed to establish need. Apply through the County Director of Veterans Affairs.
Pennsylvania does not tax military retirement pay: pensions received after reaching retirement age or completing required years of service are fully exempt from state income tax.
The Educational Gratuity Program pays up to $500 per term (up to $4,000 total) toward education at Pennsylvania schools for children ages 16-23 of wartime veterans who died in service or who have 100% permanent service-connected disabilities; applicants must have lived in Pennsylvania for five years and show financial need.
