What Oregon offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.
Oregon offers a partial exemption of a home's assessed value for veterans with a disability rating of 40% or more, and for qualifying surviving spouses or partners. For 2026 the exemption is $27,092 of assessed value (basic) or $32,512 (service-connected disability), and the amounts increase 3% each year. Apply through the county assessor.
Oregon generally taxes military retirement pay, but retirees may subtract the portion of federal pension income attributable to service performed before October 1, 1991; pay earned from service on or after that date is taxable, with a prorated subtraction for careers spanning both periods.
The Oregon Veterans' Dependent Tuition Waiver provides a full tuition waiver at Oregon public universities and community colleges for children (and unremarried spouses) of veterans who died on active duty, died of a service-connected cause, or are 100% disabled from a service-connected condition, as well as children of Purple Heart recipients awarded in 2001 or later. Students generally must be 23 or younger when applying, and the waiver covers tuition but not fees.
Oregon is one of only five states with its own state veteran home-loan program: the ORVET Home Loan offers below-market fixed-rate purchase financing (separate from the federal VA loan guaranty), usable up to four times in a veteran's lifetime.
