Arizona Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Arizona offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Beginning with tax year 2026 (HB2792, enacted as an emergency measure effective February 12, 2026), the primary residence of a veteran with a 100% VA service-connected disability rating is fully exempt from Arizona property tax, and a surviving spouse may keep the exemption while living in the home and unmarried. Veterans with lower disability ratings may qualify for a smaller partial exemption (restored statewide by Proposition 130 in 2022), which is subject to household income limits.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Arizona fully exempts military retirement pay from state income tax; the full exemption took effect in 2021 (retroactive to January 1, 2021), replacing an earlier $3,500 cap.

Education benefits

The Arizona Tuition Waiver Scholarship (ARS 15-1808) waives undergraduate tuition at Arizona public universities and community colleges for Purple Heart recipients with a 50% or higher VA disability rating, certain Arizona National Guard members injured in the line of duty, and dependents of service members who died in the line of duty.

Also worth knowing

The Arizona Department of Veterans' Services operates four skilled-nursing state veteran homes (Flagstaff, Phoenix, Tucson, and Yuma) and three Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemeteries (Bellemont, Marana, and Sierra Vista).
