Veterans with a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability, and their surviving spouses, are fully exempt from all state, county, and school property taxes on their homestead (owner-occupied home on up to 160 acres) under Alabama Code 40-9-21, with no home-value cap or income limit. Homes acquired with a VA Specially Adapted Housing grant are also exempt from all Alabama property taxes regardless of value.
Alabama fully exempts military retirement pay from state income tax, with no cap on the amount and no age requirement (Alabama Code 40-18-20).
The Alabama G.I. Dependents Scholarship Program gives dependents (children and spouses) of Alabama veterans rated 40% or more service-connected disabled up to 10 semesters of tuition, books, and fees at Alabama public colleges and technical schools, with tuition covered up to $400 per credit hour and books/fees up to $1,000 per student.
Vehicles owned by disabled veterans that were paid for all or in part by the VA are exempt from Alabama license fees and property taxes.
