Arkansas Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Arkansas offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Under Arkansas Code 26-3-306, veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled by the VA — or awarded VA special monthly compensation for loss or loss of use of one or more limbs or for total blindness — are exempt from all state property taxes on their homestead and personal property. The exemption extends to the surviving spouse and minor dependent children after the veteran's death.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Arkansas fully exempts military retirement and survivor benefits from state income tax under Act 141 of 2017, effective beginning with tax year 2018.

Education benefits

The Arkansas Military Dependents Scholarship covers tuition, mandatory fees, and on-campus room and board at Arkansas public colleges and universities for spouses and dependent children of Arkansas veterans who are 100% permanently and totally disabled or who were killed in action, missing in action, or prisoners of war.

Also worth knowing

The Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs operates two state veterans homes and two state veterans cemeteries and provides free claims assistance through a statewide network of veteran service officers.
