Alaska Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Alaska offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Alaska Statute 29.45.030 requires every taxing municipality to exempt the first $150,000 of assessed value on the primary residence of a veteran with a VA service-connected disability rating of 50% or more. The veteran must have owned and occupied the home as a primary residence before January 1 of the assessment year, and some boroughs add larger exemptions by local ordinance.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Alaska has no state income tax, so military retirement pay is not taxed at the state level.

Education benefits

The University of Alaska system waives undergraduate tuition and fees for spouses and dependents of Alaska service members who died in the line of duty or are listed as POW or KIA. Veterans eligible for a VA education benefit, along with their spouses and dependent children, also qualify for resident tuition rates at any University of Alaska campus.

Also worth knowing

Alaska resident veterans get a once-in-a-lifetime 25% discount on the purchase of state land through the Department of Natural Resources Veterans Land Discount (AS 38.05.940).
