Delaware Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Delaware offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Delaware's Disabled Veterans School Property Tax Credit covers 100% of non-vocational school-district property tax on the primary residence for veterans receiving 100% service-connected permanent-and-total disability compensation from the VA (including individual-unemployability ratings). Applicants must have been legally domiciled in Delaware for the past three years; once approved, no annual re-application is needed.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Delaware partially taxes military retirement: up to $12,500 of military pension income is excluded from state income tax regardless of age. Senate Bill 219, which passed the General Assembly on July 1, 2026 and awaited the governor's signature, would phase the exclusion up to $25,000 for all military retirees by 2029.

Education benefits

Delaware's Educational Benefits for Children of Deceased Veterans and Others program pays tuition and required fees (with Delaware public colleges given top priority) for students ages 16-24 whose parent was killed on active duty, died of a service-connected condition, or is a POW/MIA; three years of Delaware residency is required.

Also worth knowing

The Office of Veterans Services also provides benefits and claims assistance and operates a state veterans memorial cemetery.
