North Dakota Veteran Benefits (2026)

What North Dakota offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

North Dakota's Disabled Veterans Property Tax Credit is available to veterans with a service-connected disability of 50% or greater (or an extra-schedular/individual-unemployability rating paid at the 100% rate) who were honorably discharged or retired. The credit equals the veteran's disability percentage applied to the first $9,000 of the homestead's taxable value — from $4,500 at a 50% rating up to $9,000 at 100%. Applications are due to the county by April 1 of the assessment year.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Military retirement pay is fully exempt from North Dakota state income tax.

Education benefits

The ND Dependent Tuition Waiver lets the child, stepchild, spouse, or surviving spouse of a North Dakota veteran who was killed in action, died of service-connected causes, is 100% service-connected disabled, was a POW, or was declared MIA attend North Dakota state colleges tuition- and fee-free through a bachelor's degree, with no time limit to use the benefit.

Also worth knowing

The department also runs state financial assistance programs, including Veterans Aid Loans of up to $8,000 and Hardship Assistance Grants of up to $5,000 per calendar year for emergency expenses.
