Ohio Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Ohio offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Ohio's enhanced homestead exemption lets veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating (including individual unemployability) exempt $58,000 of their home's market value from property taxation — double the standard homestead exemption — with no income test, and the amount is adjusted for inflation. Surviving spouses can retain the exemption. (A bill for a total exemption, SB 92, remains pending in committee and is not law.)

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Military retirement pay is fully exempt from Ohio state income tax, with no age or income limits; Survivor Benefit Plan annuities are also not taxed.

Education benefits

The Ohio War Orphans & Severely Disabled Veterans' Children Scholarship covers 77% of tuition and general fees at public Ohio colleges (or a set annual amount at eligible private institutions) for Ohio-resident children of deceased or severely disabled wartime veterans and of POW/MIA service members, for up to five academic years.

Also worth knowing

The Department of Veterans Services also operates two Ohio Veterans Homes and administers the Ohio Veterans Bonus program.
