Minnesota Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Minnesota offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Minnesota's Market Value Exclusion for Veterans with a Disability excludes up to $150,000 of homestead market value from property taxes for veterans with a 70% or higher service-connected disability rating, and up to $300,000 for veterans rated 100% permanent and total. Surviving spouses of 100% P&T veterans may continue receiving the exclusion, and veterans apply through their county assessor.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Minnesota allows an unlimited subtraction of military retirement pay (including Survivor Benefit Plan payments) from state taxable income, with no age or income limits, so military pensions are effectively not taxed; retirees may claim the Credit for Past Military Service instead, but not both.

Education benefits

The Minnesota GI Bill provides eligible veterans and qualifying family members up to $5,000 per academic year, with a $15,000 lifetime maximum, usable for higher education, on-the-job training or apprenticeships, and license or certification programs.

Also worth knowing

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs operates five state Veterans Homes providing long-term care, along with state veterans cemeteries and the LinkVet helpline for benefits assistance.
