Hawaii Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Hawaii offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Property tax in Hawaii is administered by the counties, and each offers an exemption for totally disabled veterans. A veteran who is totally disabled due to injuries received while on active duty can have the home they own and occupy exempted from real property taxes except for a minimum tax, with exact rules, forms, and deadlines varying by county (Honolulu, Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai counties each set their own terms).

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Hawaii does not tax military retirement pay — retired pay from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces is exempt from Hawaii state income tax.

Education benefits

Hawaii's main state education benefit is for currently serving National Guard members rather than veterans generally: the Hawaii National Guard State Tuition Assistance Program (STAP) waives 100% of tuition at University of Hawaii community colleges and 50% at four-year UH campuses, subject to annual funding.

Also worth knowing

Totally disabled (100% service-connected) veterans are exempt from the state motor vehicle registration fee, and the state operates two veterans homes (Yukio Okutsu in Hilo and Daniel K. Akaka on Oahu) plus state veterans cemeteries on Oahu, Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and Lanai.
