What Indiana offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.
Indiana recently restructured its veteran property-tax relief: veterans with a total disability now have 100% of the assessed value of their principal residence deducted (no property tax on the home), and the old $240,000 assessed-value cap was repealed. Partially disabled veterans (10%-90% service-connected ratings) instead receive flat credits — $350 for wartime veterans and $250 for veterans age 62+ with at least a 10% rating — combinable up to $600, effective for 2026 assessments payable in 2027.
Indiana fully exempts military retirement pay and survivor benefits from state income tax; a phased deduction that began in 2019 reached 100% for tax year 2022 and later.
Indiana's Tuition and Fee Exemption for Children of Disabled Veterans (CDV) covers up to 124 credit hours at Indiana public colleges at the resident undergraduate rate: 100% of tuition and regularly assessed fees if the veteran parent enlisted before July 1, 2011, or 20% plus the parent's VA disability percentage for later enlistments.
Indiana also offers disabled veterans a hunting and fishing license fee reduction and operates the Indiana Veterans Home for long-term care.
