Iowa's Disabled Veteran Homestead Property Tax Credit equals 100% of the property tax levied on an eligible veteran's homestead — effectively eliminating the bill. It is available to veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating or a permanent-and-total rating based on individual unemployability paid at the 100% rate, and to qualifying surviving spouses; the veteran must own and occupy the home and be an Iowa resident for income-tax purposes.
Iowa fully exempts military retirement pay from state income tax, regardless of the taxpayer's age, for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2014 (Iowa Code 422.7).
Iowa's War Orphans Educational Assistance pays tuition aid for children of Iowa service members who died in service — up to $11,844 per year for deaths on or after September 11, 2001 (up to $3,000 total for earlier deaths). Separately, the Iowa National Guard Service Scholarship covers up to 100% of resident tuition at Iowa public colleges for serving Guard members.
The state operates the Iowa Veterans Home for long-term care and the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, and a network of County Veterans Service Officers provides free help with federal, state, and county benefit claims.
