Louisiana Veteran Benefits (2026)

What Louisiana offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.

Property tax exemption

Under a constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2022 (effective January 1, 2023), Louisiana's disabled-veteran exemption is tiered by VA rating: veterans rated 50-69% receive an additional $2,500 of assessed value exempt on top of the standard $7,500 homestead exemption (total $10,000), veterans rated 70-99% receive an additional $4,500 (total $12,000), and veterans rated 100% disabled or 100% unemployable are fully exempt from property tax on their home. The exemption extends to surviving spouses.

Military retirement pay & state income tax

Louisiana fully exempts military retirement pay from state income tax.

Education benefits

Louisiana's Title 29 dependents tuition exemption lets children (through age 24), spouses, and surviving spouses of veterans rated 90% or more disabled (including 100% individual unemployability), or of veterans who died in service or of a service-connected disability, attend Louisiana public colleges exempt from tuition and school-imposed fees for four years of schooling completed within five years.

Also worth knowing

LDVA is a cabinet-level state department whose cornerstones include long-term-care state veterans homes and burial honors at state veterans cemeteries.
