What Kansas offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.
Kansas delivers its disabled-veteran property-tax relief as an annual refund rather than an upfront exemption. Honorably discharged Kansas veterans with a permanent service-connected VA disability rating of 50% or higher can file Form K-40SVR (Property Tax Relief Claim for Seniors and Disabled Veterans) with the Kansas Department of Revenue, which refunds the amount their homestead property tax exceeds a base year. Household-income and home-value limits apply (household income of $58,041 or less for 2025; home valued at no more than $350,000 in the base year), and claims are filed each year between January 1 and April 15.
Kansas does not tax military retirement pay — military retired pay included in federal adjusted gross income is exempt from Kansas income tax.
The Kansas Hero's Scholarship Act waives tuition and required fees at Kansas public postsecondary institutions for eligible dependents and spouses of servicemembers who died in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001, or who have an 80%-or-greater service-connected disability, for up to ten semesters. A separate Kansas Military Service Scholarship covers tuition and fees for resident veterans who served at least 90 days in a hostile-fire area after 9/11 or received a Purple Heart.
The Kansas Office of Veterans Services operates two state veterans homes and four state veterans cemeteries, plus a network of Veterans Service Offices across the state that help with benefit claims at no charge.
