What Maine offers veterans on top of federal VA benefits — property tax relief, state income-tax treatment of retirement pay, and education programs. Compiled from official state sources.
Maine veterans who served during a recognized war period and are age 62 or older, or who are receiving 100% VA disability, or who became 100% disabled while serving, qualify for a $6,000 exemption from the just value of their home. Paraplegic veterans who received a VA specially adapted housing grant qualify for a larger $50,000 exemption. Applications go to the local assessor's office by April 1.
Maine does not tax military retirement pay — it is fully exempt from state income tax, and survivor benefit annuities receive the same treatment.
Maine's Veterans Dependents Educational Benefits program (Title 37-B, Section 505) provides a 100% waiver of tuition and mandatory fees at University of Maine System schools, Maine community colleges, and Maine Maritime Academy for spouses and children of veterans who are 100% permanently and totally disabled from service-connected causes, who died of such a disability, or who are POW/MIA. Children must enroll before age 22 and have 10 years to finish.
Maine resident veterans can get a free lifetime day-use pass to Maine state parks, museums, and historic sites, and holders of a Maine Disabled Veteran license plate are also exempt from camping and reservation fees at state parks.
